In MMA, speed is another very important aspect to every fighter’s game. Speed is what enables athletes like Frankie Edgar to throw his lightning fast punches, Anderson Silva to perform his devastating high kicks and Georges St. Pierre his explosive takedowns. Although we all recognize this as truth, many of us still don’t understand what makes these athletes so fast and what it takes to develop the pro speed they all possess. The truth is we all don’t have the genetics to be as fast or as explosive as some of the top level fighters we see on TV but we CAN develop our muscles and central nervous system (CNS) to perform at their maximum potential to make us faster. Let’s talk about our muscles first. We all possess a certain ratio, determined by genetics, of two types of muscles: fast twitch and slow twitch. This ratio is partially what determines the fastest athletes among us. This may seem obvious, but the more fast twitch muscle you were born with, the higher your potential to be faster. What may not be obvious, however, is the fact that you can alter this ratio by developing the fast twitch muscle you were blessed with through dynamic and explosive weight training. By growing your fast twitch muscle fibers, you inevitably change the ratio between the two types of muscles. Yet a person who was born with an unusually high amount of fast twitch muscle can still be very slow. How can this be? The answer is, that person has an untrained an underdeveloped central nervous system (CNS). This lack of training causes CNS to act like a safety belt in his car and stops the muscles from contracting at their full speed. Until the CNS is trained to understand the true potential of the fast twitch muscles in the body, the individual will continue to be slow. To train the CNS to perform fast, explosive movements and techniques, you must develop the muscle groups they correspond to in the same way. So to develop a lightning fast takedown, you should not only repeatedly practice this technique, you should do a lot of explosive squats and Olympic lifts to build the fast twitch muscle in your legs.

It’s tough when you’re training, as either a new student or someone who’s been around a while, to control the subconscious survival mechanism known as “the ego”. It’s evident in the beginners who come in and have something to prove and in turn act aggressively or rigidly. And, it is evident in the more experienced fighter who thinks because he’s got some fights under his belt that he’s now a badass. We all have seen or dealt with these fragile types who let their ego’s run rampant and understand that it’s an ugly and uncomfortable position to be around them. Thus, as an exercise in meditation or self discipline we must actively examine our own thoughts and actions and wean ourselves from our easily manipulated egos. This humility will only breed more positive relationships between people and make for a more productive and thoughtful gym experience and training. Remembering that a wild and out of control ego is an obvious display of weakness, let’s all make ourselves stronger by keeping it in check.

MMA, in its sport form, has evolved over the past couple decades to provide all different styles of martial arts and their warriors a podium to prove their worth. Throughout the history of the UFC there have been an array of different martial arts that have made their debut on its center stage, most notably including: boxing, muay thai, sambo, jiu jitsu, karate, tae kwon do, judo and wrestling. Among these, however, which can be hailed as the best? In an interview with UFC announcer and experienced martial artist, Joe Rogan, he is quoted in saying, “I personally think that the very best skill for MMA is wrestling, I think that’s the number one base to come from because those guys just flat out dictate where the fight takes place.” (fightopinion.com) This has been proven on so many different occasions and is evident in the performance of the most elite MMA fighters in history, like: GSP, Randy Couture, Grey Maynard, Frank Edgar, Chael Sonnen, Matt Hughes, Junior dos Santos, and Dan Henderson. Yet, while this is an incredibly commanding list (which could easily be lengthened), fighters in the MMA realm nowadays need to be well rounded, not only for standing and clinch-work, but on the ground as well. This is where RFLX wrestling becomes, in some ways, revolutionary. It is the first wrestling curriculum of its kind to bridge the gap between the stand up and ground games by incorporating striking techniques to compliment the natural strengths of its wrestling background. Its lessons are made to encompass all aspects of MMA and covers how to effectively use striking as a wrestler. RFLX is unlike simple sport wrestling in this regard and is tailored for the high demands of the modern MMA warrior.

RFLX Tactical Training at ILEETA in Chicago last week. Awesome group of men! Here’s what one had to say, “As a combatives instructor for a major federal law enforcement agency, as well as a Marine Corps Martial Arts Instructor and a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt, I have been exposed to numerous training systems designed for police officers, soldiers, and Marines. Of all of these, only one, RFLX Takedown Defense adequately addresses the threat of both untrained tackles and trained takedowns by assailants on the street or in the battlespace. This top-notch training fills a critical gap in modern combatives programs with a systematic, proven set of skills that are easily learned and retained.” Hal W.

This is another tragic example of a highly trained MMA athlete getting wrapped up in violence. Bellator heavyweight Blagoy Ivanov stabbed, in serious condition. Current Bellator heavyweight contender and 2008 Combat Sambo World Heavyweight Championship Blagoy Ivanov is reportedly undergoing surgery after being stabbed. Local reports say he was in a restaurant at around 5:00 am when his party was attacked by a group of seven or eight men armed with batons, guns, and knives. News accounts say Blagoy was stabbed under the armpit, and that the wound is very deep and reaches the heart. Two other people received injuries in the attack. Both have cirminal records. Police are currently questioning individuals in connection with the incident. The attack took place at the Graf Ignatiev restaurant, in the Bulgarian capital or Sofia. The 35 year old Bulgarian is undefeated in MMA, and beat Fedor Emelianenko in the semi finals of the 2008 Combat Sambo worlds.

This is an interesting article By James, an Austrailian. Basically, he is stating that a wrestling base is an advantage for MMA and also is great self defense. Hard to argue with that. Yet of course, people do because that’s what people do on forums. So read the piece here, and if you have some time to kill, follow the link and read the comments – I’m always amazed at people’s need to be “right”. With MMA fast becoming the most popular sport in the world, it’s hard to see an Australian or a Kiwi for that matter ever becoming a world contender in the UFC. It’s not because we are not talented enough but more because we are at a clear disadvantage. The Americans grow up on wrestling – it’s entrenched into them at a young age and is one of the most popular sports amongst young teenagers in the states. The collegiate system strongly supports wrestling, and many of the great MMA fighters have been All-Americans. Brazillians have jiu-jitsu backgrounds, which also is a favourite pass time in South America. If you wondered why all the UFC champions were either from America or Brazil now you know why. If Australians want to be a force in MMA, I think we need wrestling in our schools right next to football, rugby union, rugby league, AFL and cricket. Guy’s like Jon ‘Bones’ Jones, Rashad Evans, Georges St Pierre and Frankie Edgar have all grown up with wrestling as their chosen sport and have gone on to be wrestling champions through high school and university. When most of the professional football codes, whether it’s AFL or rugby, use wrestling coaches for fitness, strategic reasons or tackling methods, doesn’t it make it logical to have wrestling in our schools? We could have the next Cain Velasquez or Jon Jones at high school and he wouldn’t get the chance to learn his skills at a young age. Australia and New Zealand are producing some awesome fighter’s like Kyle Noke, George Sotiropoulos, Mark Hunt and James Te-Huna, but the reality is these guy’s may never become championship contenders because there wrestling skills aren’t up to scratch with the Americans. With wrestling been so dominant in MMA these day’s, it’s hard to see the Southern Hemisphere ever producing top notch fighters unless we start training them at a young age like the South Americans. Sotiropoulos been he most decorated fighter coming out of Australia but his last bout was a loss because he was unable to get Denis Siver to the ground. His BJJ is very good, but without that All American wrestling style he was unable to pose his will on the German and ended up getting a beating and a half. Let’s put things into perspective: if Mark Hunt took on someone like Velasquez it would be over in less than a minute if it went anywhere near the ground. We need wrestling in our schools so kids can learn basic self-defense. If they’re good enough they may get scholarships to compete in America. Either way, our fighters may never be close to getting a belt, unless they are superb freaks and have been given coaching and direction in their youth.

To capture the mainstream audiences they failed to nab with their first iteration, the UFC has composed one of their most competitive cards in promotional history (notably on a weekend free of gridiron deities). Much like the blue collar utopia Daley imagined in the 70s, the UFC is promoting its product on the their hardest working and most reliable resource they have at their disposal: wrestlers. Once again, we see that wrestling is the fundamental skill set for Mixed Martial Arts. If you are looking to learn or teach wrestling for MMA please take a look at our RFLX Combat Wrestling Core Curriculum. Read the article here… Author: T.R.
